Why follow others when you can lead the way? That’s the mantra of designer Anny Lin whose collection – and reputation – stretches across the world, keeping retailers, and their brides, very happy indeed
Designer Anny Lin – she of the ravishing swirls of print and design exotica – followed her mother’s footsteps in the world of bridal, spending time in her early years in the atelier, surrounded by sumptuous fabrics and lavish trims. No question bridal was her future, her only career choice. She later studied at the Fashion Academy and her first job, in her native Taiwan, was as an assistant to her mother, Judy.
From that same atelier, mother-and-daughter designs were offered, just occasionally, to the big US brands who looked to Taiwan for quality manufacturing as well as design inspiration. But it didn’t take Anny long to realise that working this way would simply never give her the freedom to express her personal sense of style, realise the fullness of her imagination, or, indeed, put her name out there in the bridal spotlight.
In 2011, Anny Lin formed her own label and built her brand in the UK. She did not choose to play it safe and stay within the confines of the tried and tested; rather, she did things her way, inspired by possibility while still retaining a regard for commerciality.
In her first season, she started off with a small collection of just 15 pieces, then increased it to 20, then 35, then 40. Her latest collection boasts some 50 gowns, each one an exquisite work of design art that sees colour shadings, prints, fabrics with flow, and a certain whimsical approach come together in a look that is very decidedly different and instantly noticeable. Think shining star, and you’ll get the feeling.
Today, with global distribution via some 90 stockists and a self-made niche here in the UK, the Anny Lin name commands respect within the industry and passion among brides-to-be, who demand a special look and appreciate the quality that comes with a designer label. Ethereal and exotic are two of the adjectives that are frequently used to describe her work.
There are two ranges in her portfolio, the Couture Collection, which features fine French lace, luxurious silks and the glitter of multi-faceted Swarovski crystals, and retails between £2,500 and £4,000, and the Light Luxe collection, Infinity, priced to sell from a highly-attractive £900 to £1,500
Another aspect of huge appeal are the delivery dates – between eight and ten weeks – and that gowns can be customised not just in style and cut and decoration, but also in terms of size. This is the sort of news that makes many a retailer delight… and also hugely appreciative.
Anny herself, spends much of her time in mainland China where she has a stunning flagship boutique and it is business there that gives her real insight into what today’s brides want. Such an understanding helps shape each new collection so that it becomes an extension of her distinctive signature look, and a statement of adventurous design.
What lies ahead?
The newest collection under the Anny umbrella features glittering elements that add shimmer and shine. Fabrics include vintage-style crepe and mikado and embellishments such as pearls and embossed embroidery. Anny’s modern-day interpretation of the ballgown promises to be a big style story, along with A-lines and chic princess silhouettes.
Celebs adore the Anny look and choose her first when heading for the red carpet. In China, that is high praise, and also high-level brand promotion, which is vital, as we all know, in bridal especially. Put a famous face and body in a particular designer label, and the resulting images have social media platforms working overtime. There’s no better form of advertising to the consumer who is the true potential customer
‘Dare to be different’ is the brand message at this house and we see Anny Lin continuing to pave the way. Her label has personality, buzz, and a particular beauty. That’s what it is all about today.
