Sue Lovell shares her thoughts about the Black Lives Matter movement, asking serious questions about the bridal industry…
“As businesses across the globe scramble to show they support #BLM, we wait to see if it’s just virtue signalling, or a real understanding, that will last. A commitment to do better, or a knee jerk response? Companies are quick to show they used a black model in a photo shoot, or part of a campaign. Is that enough?
In a conversation with a friend, she shared with me that she was very aware there were no black models when she was looking for her dress, no one looked like her in bridal magazines. So we googled “designer wedding dresses 2020” to see if it’s changed. Try it – what’s your view?
But that’s not the issue she wants addressing.
The question we should be asking right now, of all industry, not just this one – What is the make up of Company Owners, Designers, Reps, all Employees and on a larger scale, on Boards? Who drives the marketing departments?
That’s where the real change and understanding comes from. That’s where the honest conversations should start.
Can we start here?”
